Health and Pharmacy Retail Assistant

Duration: 1 year

OVERVIEW

This new one-year course will equip learners with the relevant knowledge and experience to work as a retail assistant in various health related areas, to include pharmacy. It may also offer an opportunity to pursue a pharmacy technician qualification in the future.

From dispensing over-the-counter medications, helping clients choose medical aids and appliances to demonstrating and selling products, this course covers the most relevant skills. The focus on health related subjects will enhance students skills in assisting prospective clients choose medical aids, appliances, demonstrating and selling.

Course content

A menu of modules are offered from the following:

  • Retail selling
  • Nutrition
  • Biology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Child health and wellbeing
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Care support
  • Work experience
  • Communications

Entry requirements

Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees
Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course and be able to exercise initiative and independence when carrying out course activities.

  • QQI Level 5 Health Service Skills

  • Occupational First Aid

  • Patient Moving & Handling Certificate

Course Fees

Course materials fee of €100. There are no exam or registration fees.

Progression

The full QQI level 5 award facilitates entry on competitive bases to a range of third level institutions nationwide. Please check with the individual admissions office of any institution you are interested in attending. Award holders can compete for employment as retail assistants in pharmacies and health related stores.
