This course is designed for individuals who wish to develop their musical skills. The modern musician is not only capable of demonstrating a high degree of instrumental skill, they also need business skills and an entrepreneurial attitude to their creative art. Knowledge of the music industry, musicianship and aural awareness as well as communication skills all form the core learning in this course. Learners will gain the skill and competence to perform music in a variety of contexts as well as competence to organise and produce an event working independently and with others. In its annual report in 2017, IMRO described the professional musician as having “…a variety of skills… creative and musical, technical and business skills” and this course has been designed with this goal in mind. . We believe that you have as much to give us and we do to you so if you love music and you love to perform we would love to work with you.

Possible Career Paths

The music industry in Ireland generates around €700 million per year and employs nearly 13,000 people which means opportunities for employment and careers abound. Musicians are sought after by employers for their expressive ability, communication skills, self discipline and resourcefulness. Working as a full time performer, session musician, instrumental teacher as well as broader careers in community music, music technology and music retail all naturally lead on from the learning in this course.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied. These entry requirements may be waived in some instances, particularly to those with relevant experience. Applicants will be interviewed. 


QQI Level 5 Music (Performance)

Course Fees

€300 administration charge. Exam fees subject to exemption


The full QQI Level 5 award facilitates entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level institutions nationwide. Further details are available from the relevant institution.

Stephen McFarlane (BA Jazz Music, PGDE Music Education, LGSM Guitar).

Stephen works in Colaiste Chiarain as Music, ICT and a SET and performs locally with many groups and styles of music. He setup Limerick’s first “Guitar Nights” series of concerts in Dolans as has graced the same stage with the likes of Limerick Jazz Society and many of Limerick professional musicians. Stephen has also performed nationally with various groups in Ireland and internationally and has recorded in RTÉ Studios as a session musician for others. Stephen continues to perform and is delighted to be starting this new course in Croom.
