OVERVIEW

This one year course is aimed at students interested in pursuing a career as a physiotherapy assistant.

A physiotherapy assistant works with a chartered physiotherapist to assess and treat clients whose movements is restricted by injury, illness or age. They implement the therapy programme created by a physiotherapist and support the client in restoring or improving their mobility.

This course enables students to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of rehabilitation to assist in the care of the individual with a Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury or Limb absence. Through practice, the Physiotherapy Assistant becomes skilled in the therapeutic handling of patients in a range of physiotherapy interventions.

  • Physiotherapy assistant theory
  • Physiotherapy assistant skills
  • Body massage and figure analysis
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Care skills
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Work experience
  • Communications

Entry requirements

Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees
Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course and be able to exercise initiative and independence when carrying out course activities.

  • Occupational First Aid

  • Patient Moving & Handling Certificate

Course Fees

Course materials fee of €100. There are no exam or registration fees.

Progression

The full QQI level 5 award facilitates entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level institutions nationwide. Further details are available from relevant institutions.
