OVERVIEW

The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in a range of sports, recreation and exercise activities to work independently and under supervision in a variety of sports related contexts and or to progress to higher education and training. The course will offer both practical and theoretical skills and provide the learner with an introduction to the world of teaching.

Please note, upon successful completion of the programme, Learners will have to progress to a third level college to obtain a teaching qualification.

  • Exercise and Fitness
  • Gaelic Football Coaching
  • Pool Lifeguard
  • Soccer Coaching
  • Sports Anatomy and Physiology
  • Sports and Recreation Studies
  • Work Experience

    Work Experience

    Work Experience is a core element of this programme providing an opportunity to put skills developed on the programme into use in a real working environment. This allows students to create links with employers and teaching and education environments.

    Entry requirements

    Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied. Exemptions may be made for mature students. Applicants will be interviewed.

    • Irish Water Safety Pool Lifeguard

    • Occupational First Aid

    Course Fees

    An administration charge of €400 applies. Exam fees subject to exemption.

    Progression

    This course provides learners with an insight in to the world of teaching and education. It is ideal for those considering a career or further studies in Secondary Teaching, Further Education Training or other forms of teaching and education. Students who attain the minimum entry requirements may progress to P.E teaching at U.C.C. and Institute of Technology Tralee. Students may also use the Higher Education Link scheme to access Arts Degrees in Universities or Sports Strength and Conditioning at Limerick Institute of Technology and many courses in IT Colleges nationwide.
